Do you have too much time on your hands? Is your brain turning to mush as you slowly become one with your couch? Maybe it’s time to try one or two hobbies to jump-start your life.
WRITE A BLOG
Even if you’re not exactly tech-savvy, blogs are a fun and easy way to connect with people, and you never have to leave your home. Blogger, sarastrand says, Perhaps you have always wanted to put your thoughts, ideas, poetry and essays on paper for others to read. Maybe there is a cause you are passionate about. It’s just possible that you don’t even know what shape your musings will take but just want to begin putting fingers to keyboard to see what comes forth.” Whatever the reason, you can blog for little or no cost. Who know you can even become one of the best fashion travel blogs. Where you take it is totally up to you.
FUN AND GAMES
Playing online games is fun, addictive and even potentially good for your brain. Doing so is definitely a step up from zoning out in front of the TV as infomercials drone on in the background. Some sites even pay you to play.
MONEY MANAGEMENT AND INVESTING
Okay, we grant that this sounds worse than no hobby at all, but it actually isn’t. If you have a small pot of money you are ready to lose in the worst case scenario, a great brain stretcher is to learn some investment strategies and then put them into practice. In all seriousness, this is not for you if you have had issues with gambling in the past.
WORK FOR FREE
Volunteering is a great way to step outside yourself and support a cause you love. In addition, you will inevitably meet new people and learn things you never expected. While you won’t get a paycheck, rewards of an intangible kind will come rolling in. Furthermore, you can use your unpaid experience to augment your CV.
GARDENING
If you have time on your hands, why not get some dirt on them as well? Growing your own vegetables and flowers can be an excellent way to commune with nature, enjoy the outdoors, meet your neighbors and even produce some of your own food. This is true even if you have never even watered a house plant before. If you’re totally ignorant about plants, take a few trips to nurseries in your area and chat up some of the friendly staff members there. Another great way to get direct knowledge is by joining a flower club. Each month, you will receive a beautiful living plant or seed packet that is sure to inspire you to start digging in the dirt.
HIKING
If physical fitness is one of your goals, intentionally taking walks in natural surroundings, otherwise known as hiking, could be just the solution for you. Like gardening, it gets you out of the house and encourages you to use all of your senses to appreciate the environment around you. If you are so inclined, you can combine these nature walks with bird watching as well.
One thing to note about all of these activities is that none of them involves thousands of dollars or a college degree. In their own unique way, each provides the stimulation that comes with trying something new. Sure, you might make mistakes, and the first few things you try may not be to your liking. However, you are certain to eventually arrive at the new hobby that fulfills you physically and psychologically.
